Presentation Abstract

Creating Culture and Climate in your Building:

This session will focus on short-term action planning and teaching in a trauma informed school. SOAR Academy is nestled in the Heart of Macon, GA and is the Non-Traditional Program that serves grades 6-12. There are currently five programs embedded in SOAR Academy ‘s Daily Schedule. Personalized Learning Center, Opportunity of Achievement and Results, Youth build and the Twilight Program.

As the Social Emotional Coordinator and PBIS Building Coach it is imperative to ensure that the needs of the students and staff are focused on. I strive daily to implement PBIS and SEL together by providing teachers with strategies that will lessen student behavior, help them recognize any data trends with student behavior in order to create a personalized plan for each individual students’ behavior, academics or attendance/suspension.

The use of Explicit teaching of Behavior expectations, Social Emotional needs of students and teachers. SOAR Academy implements Restorative Practices to help students understand their own behavior and be accountable for their behavior. Restorative Practices allows for healing, understanding, and a growth mindset for all students and even faculty and staff.

As building leaders, how do you support your staff, especially with students with that have trauma? A trauma informed school must action plan to support PBIS implementation and provide the appropriate behavioral interventions for students. It will enable schools to personalize each student's learning experience and build a positive culture and climate throughout your school.
