Relevance
By training faculty in UDL principles, they can utilize more inclusive teaching methods that will help remove barriers for students and improve their information literacy skills in turn. For example, helping faculty create a community of scholars in UDL to share insights and varied perspectives is part of the ACRL framework's scholarship as conversation threshold concept.
Proposal
This presentation will share how a librarian created a Universal Design for Learning (UDL) initiative on campus. This initiative began by utilizing UDL for library services including information literacy sessions and student worker training. Outreach and collaboration with the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching as well as outreach to faculty through a UDL Academy over the past two years strengthened relationships with faculty in a variety of disciplines as well as expanding faculty member's knowledge of information literacy concepts and the need for more inclusive pedagogy on campus. Participants will learn how the UDL initiative began through one librarian's efforts and the resulting success and improvement of faculty outreach across campus, which in turn is expected to positively affect student success.
Presentation Description
A UDL initiative began in the library and moved across campus though outreach to faculty and training during a UDL Academy. The UDL Academy helped faculty learn about and implement UDL in their courses, leading to more inclusive teaching methods and diminishing barriers to student learning.
