Short Description
We preach information literacy all the time, but what exactly is information? Join me for a review of how information is used in various fields of knowledge: physics, biology, technology, politics, art, and popular culture. We won’t try to rigorously define or isolate the essence of information but rather see what emerges from the family of resemblances these uses of information create. I’ll try to show how the idea of information works in each of these fields using theories, methods, projec ts, protests, visualizations, charts and graphs and more as examples. Sound like too much? We’ll also talk about information overload. We can then use this to inform our notions of what information literacy is and see how our usual standards, definitions, and practices stand up to it.
