Abstract
Benzodiazepines are being prescribed with increasing frequency to United States patients, drawing comparisons to, and intersecting with, the national opioid abuse epidemic. The looming threat of a ‘benzodiazepine crisis’ raises questions about how state policymakers will respond. A 10-state policy map of benzodiazepine prescribing statutes and regulations was developed to investigate the current policy environment and to establish a database for ongoing use. The impact of prescription drug abuse on state prescribing control is discussed in terms of Kingdon’s streams model.
