Description

These data were collected as part of a study investigating the knowledge, attitudes, and self-reported behaviors regarding sustainability of students at a mid-size rural university in the southeastern U.S. Baseline data were collected and evaluated. Some students then participated in an informal learning opportunity and their pre/post scores were evaluated. The data for each analysis are included, along with the survey instrument and supplemental tables.

Methodology

Students in 23 different classes in the fall of 2018 were asked to complete a survey regarding their knowledge about sustainability, their attitudes regarding sustainability, and their self-reported behaviors related to sustainability. Classes were primarily lower-level undergraduate classes, but a few upper-level courses (taught by the same professors) were included. Basic demographic data were also collected. These data served as a baseline for our study. In fall of 2018 and spring of 2019, students were provided with several opportunities of informal education to enhance their understanding of sustainability. These informal educational opportunities included an interactive lecture, the screening of a film, and a campus sustainability tour. Students completed the survey prior to and following the informal education providing a pre/post comparison. The survey asked 7 objective knowledge questions, Likert scale style questions related to attitudes towards energy, recycling, transportation, food choices, and voting, and Likert scale self-reported behavior questions related to the same categories.
