Abstract or Description
Presentation given at American Educational Research Association Conference.
The purpose of this American Library Association -funded grant was to engage a group of sixth grade students at an urban middle school in a reading and discussion series using the Great Stories Club Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation program model. The principal and school district as well as the university IRB supported documentation of this program in order to allow the researchers to explore effects on students’ development as critical readers, writers, and thinkers. The discussions, facilitated by a College of Education professor and a university librarian, with support from a local storyteller, feature books that explore questions of race, equity, identity, and history along with the exploration of the immigrant experience.
