Abstract or Description
Presentation at American Educational Research Association
Faculty in the College of Education are examining how to transform our current course of instruction to prepare our students for the demands of twenty-first century teaching. The author serves as faculty advisor for the “Teens for Literacy” program at a local urban school. The collaboration provided Freshmen pre-service teacher education candidates enrolled in “Critical and Contemporary Issues in Education” with the opportunity to exchange letters/ journals, meet, dialogue, and teach middle school students. Middle school students visited the college campus, where university students designed and led the class session. Qualitative (including pre- and post-semi-structured interviews and writing samples) as well as quantitative data (growth in student reading scores) will be presented as data sources
