Multimedia Essays for Remixing Critical Inquiry

Type of Presentation

Individual presentation

Brief Description of Presentation

This session will introduce educators to teaching with multimedia essays. We will discuss fair use/copyright, free tools for teachers, how to integrate technology and multimedia essays with existing curricula, and share lesson plans. Participants will gain tools and practices for immediate application in a variety of environments and subject areas.

Abstract of Proposal

Multimedia essays help teachers foster media literacy skills in students, while bridging formal and informal learning environments. Essentially remixed videos, multimedia essays synthesize multiple digital resources to demonstrate comprehension of new literacy skills, develop persuasive arguments and compose new narratives. Multimedia essays can even allow students to advocate for causes they care about, and challenge misleading representations and information in popular mass media they engage with every day.

The LAMP, a nonprofit media literacy organization serving low-income communities in New York City, has been at the forefront of using multimedia essays to integrate media literacy skills with traditional classroom instruction. By developing resources such as MediaBreaker/Studios, an online video editing platform and learning environment, youth and educators are provided with tools to identify, analyze and remix online media content while learning critical media literacies. The LAMP’s professional development programs have reached educators and after-school program leaders from middle schools and high schools citywide, helping teachers to integrate multimedia essays in meaningful ways for the purpose of enriching literacy skills and creating interest-driven learning opportunities.

We will introduce educators to teaching with multimedia essays. We will talk about best practices for integrating technology and multimedia essays with existing curricula. We will discuss issues around fair use and copyright and look at free and open-source tools for getting started. We will also screen examples of strong multimedia essays and share lesson plans. Each participant will gain tools and practices for use immediately, and in a variety of environments and subject areas.
