Brief Description of Presentation

This presentation will examine a nationally aired documentary on the devastating Interstate 35 Mississippi River Bridge collapse perpetuates racial stereotypes. The presenter will employ a framework for analysis, Critical Discourse Analysis, to engage participants in analyzing the features, qualities, and characteristics of objects, actors, and historical events. The presentation will include undergraduate course development on media criticality in the teacher education program as a source for advocacy and to inspire a new generation of change agents in our education system.

Abstract of Proposal

In an instant: Untold stories of survival, is a documentary series on the ABC network that chronicles the lives of individuals and their reactions to life changing events. The series, originally aired in March 2015, includes a combination of personal narratives, interviews, and news media coverage to develop a reenactment of an original event. This presentation will focus on the episode covering the collapse of the Interstate 35 Mississippi River Bridge on August 1, 2007. The reenactment of this day on national television provides an opportunity to analyze how the media promotes the passive acceptance of stereotypical images of African American males.

This presentation will employ Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) as a framework for analysis and interpretation to create moments of agency for avenues of transformation to reconcile stereotypes and prejudices informed by the media (Schiffrin, 1994). A discussion on the development of a teacher education course to investigate and critique digital media, policies, and other forms of literacies that seek to control unjust policies and practices in included (Gay & Kirkland, 2003).
