Relevance

The proposal specifically engages the Head by exploring strategies to engage reflective learning. The proposal targets teacher efficacy and collaboration. The focus is to get teachers to completely understand specific student learning targets and know what to expect from students. This is crucial in the curriculum-building process so that teachers carve out time for pre-assessment, learning, assessment, and reflection. These steps will not only build ownership within the students but will also provide the teacher with various data points to understand each student’s learning needs to differentiate accordingly.

Brief Program Description

Many educators will paste a learning target on their slideshow without understanding how to break it down or how to assess student learning. This presentation explores the power of collaboration for both standard breakdown and the review process. This is for those working in PLCs, leadership, and singletons alike!

Summary

This presentation will focus on defining learning targets as a team or as an individual. Participants will hear how departments and professional learning communities can build high-quality learning targets that align with the state and common core standards. Participants will be guided on using a set of learning targets in vertical articulation and score and sequence to drive curriculum, instruction, assessment, and student engagement. Participants will also be guided through a review process to explore how PLCs can use student samples to reflect collaboratively on whether or not students are meeting the intended standard. The presentation will explain the importance of teacher feedback for improvement and student feedback for ownership and extended learning.

This presentation would greatly benefit PLC teams but would also be a great tool for educators who might feel complacent in their curriculum. Leaders can use this presentation to fuel systems for feedback and improvement across all departments. Participants will be provided a resource that can be used with their professional teams and as a guide to defining and using learning targets. The participants will see a real-world example of how teachers can use student samples to aid in data-driven decisions within the curriculum. The main objective is to help participants think deeply about how they define and use learning targets within the classroom and feel empowered to take action when students are not learning. The purpose of this presentation is for teachers to feel renewed in their understanding of learning targets and inspired to redefine student expectations to drive stronger instruction.

Evidence

The presenter used the book Effective Universal Instruction to guide the methodology for defining and assessing Learning Targets. The collaborative method is stemmed from Professional Learning Communities, as defined by Richard DuFour.

DuFour, R., DuFour, R., Eaker, R., & Many, T. (2006) Learning by Doing: A Handbook for professional learning communities that work. Solution Tree Press.

Gibbons, K., Brown, S., & Niebling, B. C. (2019). Effective Universal Instruction: An action-oriented approach to improving tier 1. The Guilford Press.

Learning Objective 1

Learning Objective 2

Participants will be able to engage in collaborative discussions regarding learning targets.

Learning Objective 3

Participants will be able to identify the need for collaborative grading processes.
