Abstract

The Multimedia Development Center (The MDC) at Georgia Southern University is an award winning media center that develops video and interactive media to support the mission of the university. The Multimedia Development Center consists of a four person production team that can assist faculty, staff, and university departments with writing and filming high impact professional videos that showcase education, research, and student success. In addition to creating videos, the MDC also has professional streaming services that allow major events such as graduation, academic lectures, and all sporting events to be streamed to a national audience. The MDC is student focused, allowing unparalleled educational opportunities with hands-on experience for young people. Our students have co-anchored national ESPN3 events, interned at Turner Broadcasting, and have a job placement rate of 95% once graduating and working at the MDC. We also partner with many academic units offering graduate students a chance to increase their knowledge and skill set. Award highlights of the MDC include twelve Emmy nominations including wins for Best Professional Audio and two wins for Best Student Productions. The MDC was also a Blue ribbon MTV finalist for “Just Wild,” a film promoting the Wildlife Center. The MDC has also received a Mark of Excellence award from the Society of Professional Journalists for a student newscast. Video commercials produced for academic units as well as national commercials created in cooperation with Georgia Southern Marketing have had a quantifiable impact on enrollment within the academic units. These student-focused commercials have reached nationally, through ESPN and ESPN3, an estimated ten million viewers from 2014 to present day, including commercials run during the GoDaddy Bowl reaching nearly two million viewers. An example would be a commercial for the College of Business Administration’s “Roll Royce” which aired nationally and focused on alumni success. http://its.georgiasouthern.edu/multim...
