Description of Lecture
The recent firing of shock-jock Don Imus, and the more recent calls for censuring lyrics in hip-hop music, are just the most recent examples of America's move toward limiting free speech. Free speech is under attack in the country, and the surprising fact is that the trend is not only political, but social--- the people for who the First Amendment was designed to protect are more and more willing to give up that freedom in the form of a new social McCarthyism called Political Correctness. In this talk, I will underscore the importance of the First Amendment's right to free speech, and outline areas of our political and social systems that ae working against those rights while disscusing ways that citizens can protect themselves against the loss of such freedoms.
