From Feedback to Action: Using the Validated CTB-Midterm Feedback Instrument to Document and Reflect on Evidence-Based Teaching Practices

Abstract

How can instructors use evidencebased effective teaching practices (EBIPs) and measure their teaching performance without relying exclusively on end-of-term student evaluation of instruction (SEI)? The Critical Teaching Behavior Midterm Feedback Instrument (CTB-MFI) is a validated survey that gathers student feedback on five categories of EBIPs and helps instructors reflect and improve on their teaching. Participants in this session will 1) discuss the survey tool, the CTB-MFI process, and the research supporting its validity; 2) review an example CTBMFI report and engage in reflection on how the data provided through the report can be incorporated into documents prepared for annual review or teaching portfolios; and 3) evaluate how the CTB-MFI can support their instruction and implementation of EBIPs.
