Building Collaborations and Value through SoTL’s Grand Challenges
Abstract
Meaningful SoTL questions as characterized by Ciccone (2018) “arise from a troubling, surprising, or perplexing teaching and learning experience that seems to defy a simple solution” (p. 16). This description aligns with the notion of grand challenges, or wicked problems that cross disciplinary, institutional, and global boundaries (Scharff & Hamshire, 2022). Since 2018, twelve members of the Advocacy Committee of the International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (ISSOTL) have used 3 international surveys (1,627 responses), a Delphi Process with 12 global experts, and other global feedback to identify SoTL’s Grand Challenges (GCs). This initiative will help SoTL scholars develop meaningful research agendas, build toward significant advances in common teaching and learning problems, identify collaborators more easily, communicate the value of their SoTL research, and advocate for better policies and new funding opportunities.
