Abstract
It is well established that undergraduate research experiences enrich student learning. This work describes the development of a research-based undergraduate parasitology course to improve those skills at a private liberal arts university. Students maintained weekly learning journals to reflect on the skills they were learning. Student learning was assessed by a retrospective pre-post assessment of students’ knowledge of learning. Student responses showed significant gains in students’ perceived progress in research skill development and confidence in their ability to conduct research. Best practices in implementing this type of research based course and experiential learning approach will be presented.
