Learning Theories and Pedagogy – Research

Abstract

Over the last five semesters at Roanoke College I have implemented mastery-based testing in a wide variety of courses across our Mathematics curriculum including: general education Introductory Statistics, Calculus, and a variety of upper level major courses. Exhaustive quantitative and qualitative data was collected aimed at addressing the research question “How effective is mastery-based testing and does the effectiveness and student acceptance vary among different cohorts of students.” In this presentation I will introduce mastery-based testing and its variations, present interesting and surprising research results, and generate discussion on implementation in other disciplines.
