Abstract

Peer mentoring benefits students and faculty alike. How can SoTL both define and nurture these two communities? Building a learning commons in which peer mentoring is the pedagogical hub for students and faculty is critical to crafting a culture of scholarship. Exploring how mentorship functions within these communities helps shape the direction of our research and pedagogies—identifying characteristics and practices. From our perspective as a SoTL community comes a model for developing an interlocking set of research projects that seek to assess the definition and meaning of mentorship. This double lens helps to focus on how SoTL can grow and sustain a campus-wide commitment to all its community's members. Our session's goals will be to present our emerging model for review and application. We will share our mixed methodology research data on two peer mentoring communities, inviting members of the audience to experience facets of the research and design process. Ultimately, we will guide reflection on how our findings might enhance participants' own SoTL efforts.
