Transformative Inquiry: A Case Study
Abstract
Within a traditional biology department, a methodical effort was undertaken over a 5-year period to infuse/update the curriculum with molecular biology content using inquiry-based learning approaches. Collectively, the individual curricular revision projects provide a case study that examines the transformative effects of inquiry-based learning for diverse audiences. The objectives of this session will be to discuss broad-based curricular reform and the pedagogical approaches that can be used to pursue inquiry-based learning (e.g. guided inquiry, project-based learning). Participants will be provided with an overview of the projects completed in the case study and will then be asked to participate in a facilitated discussion on how to approach inquiry-based learning to transform individual courses or the broader curriculum. During the session, participants will learn about different inquiry-based pedagogies and the challenges faced in “transforming” a curriculum.
