Does It Work?: A Study in Stimulating and Measuring Critical Thinking
Abstract
This session will overview a two-year SOTL study of an online course designed to increase writing students' critical thinking. The structure of the online course community and assignments were infused with a globalization perspective to consciously develop critical thinking in students from a diverse range of majors. The presentation will briefly identify the methods used to design cohort discussion groups, to vary levels of interaction, to structure and sequence writing assignments; the major emphasis will be devoted to the application of the rubric used to assess the indices of critical thinking. Participants will receive an assessment rubric and a sample of pre/post definitions of “globalization” and “global citizenship” to analyze . Discussion of the participants' application of the rubric will follow. The objective is to take a step forward in understanding the design and measurement of critical thinking: Can we measure critical thinking with confidence ?
