Experiential Learning and Collaboration in Learning Support Writing

Abstract

In Fall 2009, 109 freshman in Learning Support Writing volunteered 388 hours for organizations such as Big Brothers/Big Sisters and Girls, Inc. For the project's writing component, students and faculty were the audience; students invited others to volunteer and encouraged professors to include experiential learning and collaboration in courses across the disciplines. Students will share how this assignment helped them achieve learning objectives; I will share data that I have gathered and used to modify my teaching strategies since 2007. We will share our gallery from the National Gallery on Writing, encourage participants to develop galleries, and ask participants to complete a survey on successful strategies for developing competent and professional writers across the disciplines. Collaborating with students is an important step in placing them inside of scholarly conversations as contributors. With agency, they participate in the scholarship of teaching and learning and experience the joy of inquiry and discovery.
