Abstract

Intentional communities are potential solutions to the problem of the loss or decline of community experienced by modern society. This paper discusses the trends regarding intentional communities from 1990-2000. The discussion focuses primarily on intentional communities in the United States (because they constitute the vast majority of intentional communities), but communities outside the United States are also included in the discussion. The Directory of Intentional Communities: A Guide to Cooperative Living (1990/1991), Communities Directory: A Guide to Cooperative Living (1995), and Communities Directory: A Guide to Intentional Communities and Cooperative Living (2000) are examined in order to create a portrait of contemporary intentional communities.
