Theme and Variations -- Translations of Valéry's Les Grenades

Subject Area

French and Francophone Studies

Abstract

Theme and Variations -- Translations of Valéry's Les Grenades. This study examines a wide variety of translations of the sonnet. Some attempt to capture the form, meter, and even rhyme of the original. Others are more fanciful renderings of meanings and interpretations. Finally, there are allophonic and pictorial versions. These examples serve to illustrate the wide range of possibilities that may be considered within the purview of translations, with some discussion of which ones are appropriate for which audiences.
