Primary Presenter Brief Bio

Dr. Marta Collier is a retired associate professor of elementary education and founder and CEO of Marta Collier Educational Systems and Services, LLC. She has over thirty years of experience as a classroom teacher and trainer of teachers including the University of Arkansas College of Education where she rose to the rank of tenured associate professor. Dr. Collier also received multiple grant awards for her distinguished work in parent education in the Marshallese Community of Northwest Arkansas. She continues her work in early childhood through curriculum development, parent education and professional development training in the state of Georgia and the southern region. Dr. Collier received her M.Ed. in elementary education and Ph.D. In elementary education from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa.

Second Presenter Brief Bio

Willyerd R. Collier, Sr. is co-founder and CFO of Marta Collier Educational Systems and Services. He is a licensed attorney in the State of Georgia and an over 20 year veteran in the field of Affirmative Action and Compliance at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa and the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. He most recently served as Special Assistant to the President and Director of the Malcolm X Institute at Wabash College, Crawfordsville, Indiana. He is an articulate and committed advocate for strong educational opportunities and support for young children and the adults responsible for their care.

Brief Session Description

Smart Play My Way: A Rain Forest Adventure will explore the outcomes of a parent-child summer experience focused on study of the rain forest and its treasures. Learn how relationships and knowledge base outcomes grow and develop through project-based, experiential learning.

Full Session Description

The session will focus on concepts, strategies and outcomes of a summer exploration study of the rain forest undertaken with a father and son over a 10- day period. We will share information concerning what was learned regarding strengthening parent-child relations and knowledge acquisition through project-based, experiential learning. The benefits of relevant literature -based instruction in drawing connections and meaning making are highlighted through pictures and text. We will also discuss literary and manipulative material resources that provided support of teaching and learning related to this project.
