HIV/AIDS: Adults and Adolescents, Pregnancy and the Newborn
Abstract
This session focuses on the challenges of adolescent, adult and HIV care with pregnancy with the goals of reviewing the most up to date guidelines. This presentation will examine how statistics and media effect HIV care; identify HIV risk factors, initial assessment and care for individuals living with and affected by HIV; review current HIV therapy and follow up for adults and adolescents; describe preconception counselling, testing, assessment and therapy of the mother’s HIV and the newborn; discuss aspects of medical care prior to, throughout, and post-hospitalization of the mother’s HIV and the newborn; and illustrate the continuation of care post-hospitalization with an emphasis on medical adherence, and care associated with breast feeding and pre-mastication of food.
