Description of Lecture
The history of perfumery is a fascinating one. Until the lat nineteenth century, when the organic laboratory syntheses of perfumes became widespread, only the nobility and clergy could afford them. Perfumes were, in essence, social markers. Today chemists have created a multi-billion dollar industry and merchandisers have jumped on the bandwagon. Designer perfume wars are currently being waged world-wide, with rock music, movie and sports superstars providing the sweet smell of success. Robert Kolodny, Department of Chemistry and Physics
