Abstract
The roles of the professional school counselor and the school librarian are fundamentally rooted in supporting the holistic development of students, ensuring their success throughout their K–12 education and beyond. While these professions have distinct differences, both professions are guided by comprehensive professional standards that establish clear expectations, promote best practices, and foster student growth within the school setting. For this crosswalk, we conducted a comparative analysis of these respective standards to identify shared themes and areas of alignment. Professional school counselors adhere to the standards set forth by the American School Counseling Association (ASCA), while school librarians are guided by the American Association of School Librarians (AASL). The purpose of this crosswalk is to highlight the intersections between these two fields in order to strengthen collaboration which in turn can promote students’ social-emotional learning and growth.Through this partnership, both professions work toward a common objective: cultivating lifelong learners and contributing to the development of an informed and engaged future generation. This is something that is already occurring within these professions individually, but it is through this crosswalk that we aim to bridge the gap and identify how we can be even more effective together.
