Abstract

Accelerated bridge construction is a relatively new construction concept that is increasingly becoming more popular throughout the United States. Although ABC can be used in all aspects of construction, it is more applicable in bridge rehabilitation and construction. Accelerated bridge construction utilizes a very lean approach to every phase in the construction process to produce a quality product in the shortest amount of time with little onsite time and traffic disruption. Accelerated bridge construction has been proven to enhance site constructability, delivery time, and work zone safety. The Georgia Department of Transportation has enlisted the help of Georgia Southern University to develop a highly effective toolkit that can be used statewide. Our purpose is to develop a construction manual that can be easily referred to in the field while constructing these bridges. We will be focusing on bridge spans of 40, 60, and 80 feet lengths with pre-stressed concrete girders and concrete decked steel girders. The manual will encompass every step in the construction process from the bridge foundation to the paving of the deck. It will also outline the construction process of the offsite manufacturing area, the transportation of elements to the jobsite, and the erecting of the prefabricated bridge elements. The overall concept of accelerated bridge construction is to utilize off-site prefabricated materials to detrimentally decrease the on-site construction time which in turn reduces the overall delivery time with minimal pedestrian/commuter disruptions. These methods can also be applied during a state of emergency to erect crucial bridges that may have been knocked out by severe weather or other hazardous conditions. Our ABC team will also be determining construction cost estimates and comparisons to conventional bridge construction. We will be analyzing past ABC projects to review costs estimates in other states and relating them to the state of Georgia. We will be reviewing and comparing all the cost factors to be included in typical bridge construction verses ABC.
