The impervious surface created by highway in the state of Georgia and the United States collects and transports a large volume of stormwater into water bodies.

United States highways and bridge system is one of the contributors for non-point source pollution stated by the United States Environmental Protection Agency.

Highway stormwater runoff constitutes significant pollutants such as total suspended solids (TSS), “heavy metal”, nutrients, organic contaminants, oil and grease which harm and impact water quality and endangered aquatic species.
