Closed-Form Expressions to Locate Neutral Axis in Doubly Reinforced Concrete Beams

Poster 171

The purpose of this study was to determine a set of closed-form equations for doubly-reinforced concrete beams. Within doubly-reinforced concrete beams there are four different cases that can occur for analysis: tensile steel yielding and compressive steel not yielding (Case 1), tensile and compressive steel yielding (Case 2), tensile and compressive steel not yielding (Case 3), tensile steel not yielding and compressive steel yielding (Case 4). Once the closed-form equation for each case were determined, a program was written within SMATH Studios to simplify the calculations. The SMATH Studio program was compared to examples from textbooks and a created Excel spreadsheet.
