Background

Ventriculostomies are a procedure done in the ER/trauma settings in which a single doctor is required to insert an external ventricular drain (EVD) into the ventricles of the patient’s brain in order to relieve and measure pressure on the brain. Because this has to be done by one doctor quickly, it is very difficult for a single doctor to insert the catheter into the head and then hold the EVD catheter in in that position while suturing it in place.
