Brief Program Description
The third wave of educational reform goes beyond narrowly focusing on student achievement (first wave) to also recognizing the need for social-emotional learning (second wave), and now including wraparound services for health, safety, and family/community engagement to equitably meet the holistic needs of all students, especially those in poverty. Contributing to the third wave, the “5H” Holistic Framework (5HHF) provides five protective/promotive factors to meet students’ needs and promote their holistic well-being: Head (academic achievement), Heart (social-emotional care), Hand (safety/security), Health (physical/mental health), and Home (family/community engagement). We will introduce educators to current vocabulary, processes for gathering student voice, a readiness inventory, an assessment rubric, a whole school improvement template, and funding opportunities needed to turn the 5HHF into action.

Biographical Sketch
Leigh Colburn is a career educator, community leader, and educational consultant working with school districts who wish to create wraparound service opportunities for their students and families. For ten years, Leigh proudly served as the principal of Marietta High School until founding the Graduate Marietta Student Success Center on July 1, 2015. As Director of the Success Center, she established dynamic partnerships with the Marietta Board of Education, the City Council, public safety departments, and community groups to improve the quality of life for Marietta’s teens. During her career with Marietta City Schools, Leigh garnered many awards such as One of 75 Notable Women in Cobb County History, the Cobb County Creating Community Award, Marietta High School Distinguished Alumnus of the Year, Marietta City Schools Employee of the Year, Marietta’s Citizen of the Year, and Woman of the Year by liveSAFE Resources.
Leigh earned degrees from Kennesaw State University, the University of Mississippi, and the University of Alabama. Leigh and her husband, Doug, have raised two sons who attended Marietta High School. Her oldest son, John, is a pastor in Birmingham and her younger son, Phillip, is pursuing a career in public safety and serving proudly as a member of the United States Army.
Linda Beggs is a veteran facilitator focused on helping organizations and individuals work better together to produce results. Linda’s extensive work in schools and nonprofits, paired with her background in corporate culture and change management, prepared her to engage schools to create the high-trust culture essential to implementing wraparound resource centers.
Linda is certified in the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and the EQ-i and worked for over ten years as a consultant with Franklin Covey. Her client list includes Chattahoochee Tech, Cobb County School System, liveSAFE Resources, Arthur Blank Family of Companies, Cobb EMC, Honda, Pepsi, Duracell, WellStar, Lockheed Martin, and The Southern Company.
Linda is active in her community, having served on various Boards and committees including Leadership Engaged, Marietta’s College & Career Academy Steering Committee, Mentoring for Leadership, and liveSAFE Women of Achievement. She is a graduate and past chair of Leadership Cobb. She enjoys studying with the Anne Hudgins Shakespeare Class.
Linda is a proud graduate of the University of Georgia’s Terry College of Business. She and her husband, Phillip, have two daughters who graduated from Marietta High School. Their oldest, Georgia, is a senior at the University of Georgia and their youngest, Samantha, is a freshman at Kennesaw State University.
