Abstract
The Shewhart X- and R- (or S-) charts are commonly used to monitor the mean and standard deviation of a continuous quality measure. Another use of the control chart is to analyze a set of preliminary data taken on the output of a production process to determine if the process is behaving in a stable manner. A chart used in this manner is referred to as a Phase I or retrospective control chart. We give a comparison of two Phase I control charts recommended in the literature.
