Purpose

The purpose of the Georgia Southern University (GS) Libraries Collection Development Policy is to assist librarians and faculty in the selection, acquisition, and management of library materials in order to provide students and faculty with access to print and electronic information resources in support of the educational mission of the University and the University Libraries. The policy assists the librarians in the decision-making process related to routine acquisitions of resources, including monographs, standing orders, serials, electronic resources, and gift materials, as well as establishing priorities for guiding decisions related to preservation and deselection.

The Collection Development Policy is also a response to external factors that make the need for written documentation necessary. These factors include: the growth in size and complexity of the publishing world, financial pressures that affect the purchasing power of libraries, the proliferation of electronic resources, and increasing expectations of accountability to library governing entities. With the rise of electronic licenses, open-access publishing, and institutional repositories, libraries have broadened the focus from developing collections to include managing content. Some resources, including print and electronic formats, become part of the permanent library collection, while others are licensed for access as funds permit and as needs evolve. Finally, the policy is intended to support better communication between teaching faculty and librarians, enabling them to evaluate progress in developing appropriate collections.

This Collection Development Policy is based on the combined policies of the Zach S. Henderson Library on the Statesboro, Georgia campus, and Lane Library on the Armstrong campus in Savannah, Georgia.
