Abstract

‘The Scars We Choose’ is an excerpt of a full-length novel of the same name. It places the Hawai’ian oral epic of 'Pele & Hi’iaka' within the context of World War II, drawing context from historical accounts of women of color who served as army nurses and the second-generation Japanese men who made up the 442nd Infantry Regiment. The piece also incorporates works of creative non-fiction written from my own perspective in order to better highlight the themes of how history negotiates with memory.
