Abstract
When looking at a specific text written centuries ago, performers often stumble across multiple settings of the same texts by several composers. While one composer may focus more on the general emotions the text conveys, another might focus on text painting. It is important to examine compositional techniques as clues to creating a compelling performance. By looking at three different settings of the same text, this paper will discuss ways in which each composer’s compositional style uniquely highlights aspects of the text.
