Abstract
For choral programs that operate outside of a school system, enrollment can be a challenge. With so many activities being offered for students both inside and outside of school, how can these programs stand out to families? What is it that draws students to join choral ensembles that operate outside of the public school setting? In this study, students and their families were asked why they joined a community choir and then chose to continue in such programs. The intent of this study was to identify motivations of community choral ensemble members. The survey yielded several new insights into motivations, particularly from the parent/guardian perspective. Based on the results, recommendations will be made for recruitment and retention efforts.
