Abstract

Art is a sensory language. In language learning, visual literacy is an essential factor in developing interlanguage. Art can interchange cultural understanding and promote social learning. The research gathered is based on the perspectives of teachers in the neighboring schools located in Georgia. The purpose of this paper is to examine how teachers can support language learning using visual literacy. Teachers are asked to participate in an interview to record their experiences in language learning. In the completion of the data collected, the analysis gives a deeper understanding of how to improve accommodating language learners in the classroom using visual arts.

Thesis Summary

The purpose of the study is to understand the perspectives of teachers in their application of visual aids and their benefits to developing language acquisition for ESOL students. In addition, the research will explore visual literacy teaching strategies with art theory/criticism and find connections to students’ self-efficacy in their language acquisition. Participants will be asked how they might implement visual media for their content subject area and any potential limitations to the teaching strategies. The study aims to promote the incentives of visual literacy and examine the perspectives and approaches of teachers using visual media with ESOL students in their classroom. Interviews and surveys were conducted with in-service educators in a public school setting located in South Georgia.
