Abstract
In 2017, Georgia Southern purchased the Convent of Perpetual Adoration for their latest Campus in Wexford, Ireland. This particular Convent is 147 years old and has a rich history in the community. With the purchase of this Convent, the University plans on repurposing the building into a living quarters for students who choose to study abroad. With this decision comes many more considerations, such as students' needs, comfort, and safety. A survey has been conducted where students from Georgia Southern University who had studied abroad in Wexford, Ireland answered a variety of questions about their experiences and preferences. The participants included 4 males and 12 females, the majority were seniors and graduate students. Most students had already learned about sustainability and historic preservation prior or outside of college. Through this survey, the students experienced having a common living room, operable windows, WIFI and poor quality task lighting most frequently. They also valued original design features like the stained glass windows and woodwork. Clean air, clean water and operable windows were also expected sustainability related design features. General preferences included the desire for access to the internet, ample storage, good task lighting, and dedicated social and quiet spaces. Findings from this study can help guide future development of study abroad facilities elsewhere to optimize student experiences and generally support student success.
