Presentation Description
The Department of Campus Life at Clayton State University annually sponsors the Service Learning Institute designed to introduce students to the concepts of service learning and help develop their commitment to public service, social justice and learning. The Service Learning Institute is targeted primarily to 1st year and transfer students but is open to all students who have a desire to learn and serve.
The program will focus on defining service related vocabulary such as community service, civic engagement, social justice, and volunteerism; and will offer participants a platform to discuss social justice issues and community needs in a safe and interactive environment.
By the end of the day participants will leave with a better understanding of community service, volunteerism, and civic engagement and what it means to be an active citizen. This presentation will provide other Student Life personnel and student leaders a model to replicate this program on their campuses.

Program Abstract
Traditionally it is thought that service learning is learning that can only happen in the classroom.
This interactive workshop will provide participants with a model for introducing service learning to students in a co-curricular, outside of the classroom format.
This presentation will teach students how service learning is different from volunteerism and offer a platform to discuss social justice issues and community needs in a safe and interactive environment.
