Program Abstract

The purpose of this session is to: draw attention to the global refugee crisis; and share digital storytelling practices in the classroom to engage students in developing an understanding and raising awareness of refugee and immigrant issues in our local communities.

Presentation Description

The current refugee crisis seen in Europe and ongoing debates on immigration policy in the United States provide a learning opportunity for our students to

  1. Engage in the topic of immigration,
  2. Be exposed to ethnically diverse populations, and
  3. Learn about the contributions of refugees and immigrants to American culture and economy.

The goal of this session is to share with session participants service-learning activities designed to engage students in developing an understanding and raising awareness of refugee issues in our local communities. The session is divided into the following sections:

  1. Introduction: Connecting students to a local non-profit organization in the Nashville area that works with refugees and immigrants;
  2. Engagement: Providing students an opportunity to write a story, interview refugees and immigrants, create a video, and develop a web page to raise awareness of refugee and immigrant issues in the community.
  3. Conclusion: Reflecting on the service-learning activities and sharing student feedback regarding the experience.
