Presentation Description
The current refugee crisis seen in Europe and ongoing debates on immigration policy in the United States provide a learning opportunity for our students to
- Engage in the topic of immigration,
- Be exposed to ethnically diverse populations, and
- Learn about the contributions of refugees and immigrants to American culture and economy.
The goal of this session is to share with session participants service-learning activities designed to engage students in developing an understanding and raising awareness of refugee issues in our local communities. The session is divided into the following sections:
- Introduction: Connecting students to a local non-profit organization in the Nashville area that works with refugees and immigrants;
- Engagement: Providing students an opportunity to write a story, interview refugees and immigrants, create a video, and develop a web page to raise awareness of refugee and immigrant issues in the community.
- Conclusion: Reflecting on the service-learning activities and sharing student feedback regarding the experience.
