Presentation Description
Leadership development programs are nothing new to higher education; many models exist, ranging from academic leadership courses to leadership sequences for student cohorts. Studies show that multiple forms of student involvement can be effective in developing leadership skills, therefore, many universities offer multiple leadership programs across campus, each using different methods and models and targeted toward specific student populations.
This presentation will detail The University of Southern Mississippi’s efforts to integrate disparate leadership programs across campus and capitalize on the various forms of student engagement to teach leadership lessons and hone student skills. This upcoming May, we will be graduating our first cohort of The Leadership Experience, an official academic certificate program. The certificate consists of:
- Two core leadership courses, both service-learning. The first core leadership class is an introduction to leadership using Kouzes’ Leadership Challenge model. Students serve with a local non-profit and observe leadership skills in action. The second class is a Leadership Practicum course, in which students work in groups on a semester-long project with a non-profit. The class meets weekly to discuss the project, hear from community leaders, and produce a digital portfolio with resume, goals, and leadership philosophy.
- Three electives chosen from a list of mostly general education courses. The list is developed each year and is composed of classes pertaining to either leadership or skills related to leadership (e.g. interpersonal communication, cultural competency). Discipline-specific leadership classes are also accepted.
- Three out-of-classroom experiences with reflections. This allows students to participate in a wide variety of student activities, including being an officer in a student organization, serving for a semester with a non-profit, attending leadership summits, or organizing a significant event on campus. Students must submit a reflection on each experience using Patti Clayton’s DEAL Model.
This presentation will inform participants of lessons learned while developing and implementing the certificate. Time for questions and discussion of best practice will be included.
