Program Abstract

Promoting peer mediation to children in schools, sets the foundation for a community that is more aware of conflict and how to effectively resolve them.

The focus of Dr.Laura Agnich's class, facilitated by the Universities award winning Mock Mediation Club is on helping university students learn the principles and skills associated with Mediation and through a service-learning format, allows these college students to further reach out to younger students and teach them these valuable skills.

Presentation Description

Mediation is a growing format for dispute resolution which has earned its reputation for being a successful and effective format of resolving disputes in a creative and collaborative manner.

In a society where conflict is increasing, it should be understood that conflict is not necessarily a bad thing but, it is also equally important to understand how to effectively communicate when in conflict and what steps should be taken to effectively resolve conflict.

The presentation will be about the service-learning project conducted at Georgia Southern University, through Dr.Laura Agnich’s class - facilitated by trained members of the Mock Mediation Club of Georgia Southern University and will provide insight into the structure of the project, some of the key topics addressed and potential growth and vision for the project moving in to the future.

Structure of the project:

How the class is setup and what are some of the ways in which students are engaged and made excited about learning and teaching mediation.

Key topics:

Topics addressed such as setting ground rules, respect in mediation, being open and honest, the mediation mindset and the focus on win-win solutions among many of the other topics discussed and practiced through the course.

Potential growth and future vision:

The objective is to help students learn about mediation at a young age so that they feel equipped to deal with conflict and difficult situations and by practicing these skills at a young age, be able to take these skills to their future homes, workplaces and overall help build a more collaborative community that understands and appreciates conflict and is equipped with the tools to resolve them.

Mediation is founded upon respecting opinions for finding the best possible solutions. In line with this concept, the presentation and discussions will also feature an idea bank for the audience members to provide feedback and ideas based on what they envision the project to become. This information will be taken in and reviewed for potential enhancement of the existing service-learning project and its projected growth.
