Program Abstract

Tracking students’ community involvement can be a daunting task for colleges and universities. The purpose of this session is to help individuals develop assessment strategies for their institutions by sharing a model for tracking that was developed at Samford University. Using Samford’s annual Community Engagement Report as a guide, participants will be encouraged to consider why tracking matters and how they can best collect and report community engagement data on their own campuses.

Presentation Description

Colleges and universities are often interested in tracking the community involvement of their students, a task that typically falls to community engagement administrators. The purpose of this session is to help individuals develop assessment strategies for their institutions by sharing a model for tracking that was developed at Samford University.

In fall 2014, Samford published its first-ever Community Engagement Report*, which included data submitted by each of the university’s schools and colleges, Athletics, Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, and other departments across campus. The report prompted important conversations about the university’s role in the community and encouraged Samford to renew its longstanding commitment to service. The second annual report will be published in fall 2015.

During this session, the presenter will engage participants in conversation about why tracking matters, how to identify important stakeholders on one’s campus, and what data to include in this type of report. Samford’s report will be used to provide examples and help facilitate dialogue about these topics. Each participant will receive a copy of Samford’s report, as well as information about data collection methods that could be adapted and used by other institutions.
