Abstract
Our aim in this project is to add to the growing body of research wherein joy is the central unit of analysis. This presentation will showcase Black pre-service teachers’ conceptualization of joy: what it looks like, where they find it, and how they create it. We then discuss to what extent their university experiences (mis)aligns with those conceptions. Study participants are members of a student organization dedicated to supporting Black pre-service teacher success. We analyze data from interviews, observations, and documents. By highlighting students’ experiences, we will inform crucial strategies as universities look to recruit and retain diverse teacher candidates.
