Abstract
From the perspective of the presenters, it is important to begin a doctoral program with the end in mind. Obtaining Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval to collect data for their dissertation is a challenge often faced by doctoral students. This presentation advocates that the context for the IRB application should be developed in the early stages of the program and include the importance of students understanding of the IRB process at their own institution. The presenters utilize their knowledge of their institutional IRB processes to provide insights to assist students with overcoming the hurdles related to obtaining IRB approval. The presentation will also include a discussion from lived experiences of common challenges by doctoral students at the presenters’ institution, which may be similar to other institutions.
