Bringing Data to life. Using Technology to Automate Data Visualization in District 5-2, Georgia.

Abstract

Background: The traditional means of updating stakeholders, partners, and community members have been via written reports. While it is necessary, the problem it poses is that it is time-consuming to prepare and usually requires input from at least 2 or 3 people for every publication or update. Another issue is that it can be difficult to understand, especially for members of the community who are not in the public health field. Lastly, the reports are usually very long so even though they may reach everyone in our priority population, not everyone will read it in its entirety, which can lead to misinterpretations and not having a clear and accurate understanding of what is being reported. Our goal at NCHD is to focus on data analytics and visualization to create reports in an easily understandable, interactive format while minimizing the time it takes to prepare them.

Methods: Programs such as Microsoft Excel and Tableau were used to design tools for data collection and internal processing that could be easily translated into dashboards to use in place of lengthy reports.

Results: Creating dashboards in place of reports to present findings took less time and manpower to prepare and streamlined the entire reporting process. The data being presented was in a format that grabbed the attention of the audience and was easily understood. In this format it was easy to detect trends, outliers and other significant details. It was also a simple process to prepare separate dashboards in instances where some data were not for public consumption.

Conclusion: This approach to reporting for the district has been a success and it is one that will be used through different programs to report outcomes in the future.
