A Movement Towards Justice: A Collaborative Approach to Addressing Violence in Georgia

Abstract

In Fall 2020 the Crisis Line & Safe House in Macon, Georgia began exploring the development of a Family Justice Center. With the support of the Criminal Justice Center Coordinating Council and the Family Justice Center Alliance, a program of Alliance for HOPE International, a community-based study was conducted in June 2021, leading to the creation of One Safe Place, one of the first Family Justice Centers to be established in Georgia. Guided by the core framework elements of the Family Justice Center model, One-Safe place is designed to support victims of violence through the co-location of victim’s services. In anticipation of serving victims of violence from both urban and rural areas surrounding One Safe Place, the Family Justice Center will offer a trauma informed approach to adults and children alike. Utilizing the Science of HOPE, One Safe Place will serve as Georgia’s first site for Camp HOPE America, a program designed to focus on children exposed to domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse; participating children participate in year-round mentoring and summer camps, at no-cost. Acknowledging the need for a collaborative, coordinated approach to addressing violence in Central Georgia, One Safe Place has assembled a diverse partnership of over 20 legal, health, and socially focused entities to support victims of violence. Anticipating a 2023 opening, One Safe Place will serve as a centralized hub for victim’s services, education, advocacy, and criminal justice system.
