A Public Health Food & Nutrition Intervention for Youth with Disabilities
Abstract
Intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) among children and adults are accompanied by serious health, nutrition, educational, and socioeconomic implications and individuals with IDD continue to have unmet health and personal care needs. This session will share information with participants about a rural southern Georgia 4-week summer camp for adolescents (ages 9-22) with IDD that include interventions focusing on daily physical activity, food skills and nutrition education, and other life skills training. Participants will learn about the evolution and the current components of the camp, with an emphasis on the food skills and nutrition education program. Participants will learn about planning and implementation challenges and successes. Additionally, session participants will learn about the research methods and outcomes of the camp, with a focus on nutrition knowledge, self-efficacy for food preparation, self-efficacy healthy eating, healthy food preferences, actual food preparation skills, and food consumption.
