Oral Health Management for the HIV/AIDS Patient

Abstract

Patients living with HIV are at an increased risk for health conditions that will negatively affect their overall health. It is vital the HIV care team evaluate the oral condition of the individual and how it may contribute to a delay in managing their HIV disease. There are multiple concerning conditions that can be detected during an oral exam; Kaposi’s sarcoma, linear gingival erythema (LGE), necrotizing ulcerative periodontitis (NUP), oral candidiasis, xerostomia and caries. Poor oral health may cause a decline in the patient’s BMI due to malnutrition.
