Culture Keeper Actions to Support Student and Staff Success

Presentation Abstract

At Radloff Middle School, we recognize the role that a Positive Behavioral Intervention and Support (PBIS) program has on the creation and promotion of a positive and inclusive environment for our students, staff, and community. In response to feedback from staff, students and community stakeholders through a variety of feedback tools; including our yearly Educator Effectiveness Survey (EES), Student EES & Well-being Survey and our Principal's Student Advisory Committee, we have implemented several targeted initiatives guided by our district’s Blueprint for the Future to create a safer and more supportive atmosphere for our school.

Our PBIS Acknowledgement initiative includes "Thursdays Two by Twos," which encourages staff to write two appreciation cards for colleagues and issue two positive behavior referrals for students each Thursday in an effort to foster a culture of recognition.

In addition, students are acknowledged for behaviors that align with our school wide PBIS motto of Respect, Responsibility and Readiness. Students displaying these behaviors in class, in the hallway and in common areas are given stamps inside of a passport booklet. Their stamps are recognition for positive behaviors. The "1 by 3" initiative ensures teachers provide three opportunities per class period for students to earn PBIS stamps, which can be redeemed for event access and PBIS Store items.

Our Tier 1 behavior system is a vital part of creating a culture of positivity and inclusiveness and student success. Our Focus on acknowledging student behavior is integrated throughout our school environment, including our instructional and academic press settings and works to develop and support our students as they develop intrinsic motivation.

Conference Program Description

Our presentation would model the PBIS acknowledgement system used at Radloff Middle. We would provide each participant with a version of our PBIS stamp book and throughout our review of our Tier 1 behavior system, we would model acknowledging behavior of the participants by providing them stamps. At the conclusion of our presentation, participants would tally their stamps and the participant with the highest stamp count would be acknowledged with a reward.
